Amid much pageantry, Burlington Lawn Bowling Association hosted the Canadian National Championships at the New Street Club. The five-day tournament began with a short parade led by a piper and colour guard, followed by the various provincial teams. During the opening ceremony, a warm welcome was extended to all out-of-town visitors by MP Karina Gould; as well as Tiffany, a rep of MPP Jane McKenna. President Doug Busey and V.P. Tony Farrell of the Burlington club spoke, recognizing the contribution of the volunteers. Everyone joined in to sing “O Canada”.
Men’s and ladies Teams from seven provinces participated in the bowls, stopping for lunch and breaks between games. The very hospitable Burlington hosts supplied several meals to all present, including a bbq and continuous coffee and snacks.
Each day the crowd of spectators increased as did the excitement. Nearing the end of the tournament, the bowling was momentarily disrupted by the buzz of a Lancaster bomber circling overhead.
